Rockstar - Music Video

We created a small music video based off Rockstar, mimicking the original format of the music video. This was difficult as you had to take people out of their comfort zones to preform, which without rehearsal can turn out really bad.
When it came to editing it was difficult as some of the participants were not very good at lip syncing so the music was not in sync cause the quality of the video to be poor.
Sir only gave us 2hours to complete this task and we had to do it without planing and also at times when getting participants was difficult.
From this task I have learnt the importance of lip syncing for my music video and how bad lip syncing can alter/ruin the whole video. Moving forward finding camera confident people and also taking more than one shot would help improve the quality to the video.

What i have learnt....

Things i have learnt:

  1. From this I have learnt how long it take just to create 50 seconds of a music video. So i now know how much time i will have to put into planing and filming.
  2. Mise en Scene also needs a lot of thought and time. To make it work well, rather than just chucking things together because it looks good.

How i will use what i have learnt:

  1. I will make sure i dedicate time to planing thoroughly
  2. I will try to create as much symbolic

What if i go? Music video

Whilst filming for our music video as one of our tasks we had many challenges and obstacles we had come across whether it being the way in which we place the camera or the timing of when each character should come up. Nonetheless, we did have a couple of strengths, for example: our attires were colour coordinated along with our props which were the balloons.

Location: school corridors; each floor had their own colour, e.g: red, blue and yellow which we matched our outfits to
Props used:  balloons, a fan
Outfits: black jeans/trousers, black shoes and a bright coloured top (whichever floor each character was designated to)
Camera: Canon EOS 600D

The first scene introduced had one or two implications as we had difficulties with our timings with the song and when the character had jumped up. Thus, it resulted to us cropping the song clip as the intro of it was too long. So, once this was done the beat of the music started when the character first came onto the scene and went very well together.

Second clip was sped up to match when the music had started. The character is wearing a bright yellow jumper which contrasts to the orange background behind her. However, there were a couple of balloons thrown at the character but it was not captured on camera due to timing, this is one implication we had whilst filming.

How we manipulated mise-en-scene:
1. Balloons: we decided to use balloons are our main prop as we felt as though it gave a very positive and uplifting mood which fits the songs criteria as the song itself gave out a very contended sense
2. Costumes: when it came to our attires we came up with the idea of matching it with the colour of each school corridor that we was designated to. This manipulated mise-en-scene as in a few scenes one of us were wearing a yellow jumper, but our background was yellow which contrast one another.
3. Settings: we chose to film in the corridors because of the colour each floor has and decided that the coloured wall will make a huge difference to our video itself since it brightened our shots and made us stand out too. This manipulated mise-en-scene as popular music videos in the industry focus heavily on the settings and how it could present the characters personality.

EBI:
If we were given the chance to do this again we would improve on what resources we plan to use. For example, after editing the music video we came up with the idea of using a scrabble board game at the beginning and write out the name of the song. This could signify unity as it is a family/friends game and as it is a fun game (to some) it precisely represents what our music video is about.

We would improve on what kind of shots we would use. For example, in this music video we only used 2 different type of shots which was close ups and medium shots. In future tasks we will use a vast majority of camera shots to explore mise-en-scene in a number of ways.

When it came to the lighting it was a barrier for us due to it being minimal as we could only use the lights that were switched on in the corridors. But, next time we will plan what lighting we could use for example, use the light of a lamp or flashlights from our phone etc.

Ariana Grande - The Way is similar to our music video as she used balloons. However they made the music video look even better by adding holograms over the top and by having loads of balloons rather than just a few. Creating more of an atmosphere.

Mise en Scene task

“In our video we have tried to recreate a disrupted and broken relationship to create a melancholy atmosphere. We have done this by adapting the mise-en-scene and ensuring some subtle costume changes – such as Zebie’s jacket – to signify small differences in the two characters, showing little shifts in the relationship, which would cause disturbances. However, the jacket in this instance was also used as a symbol of forgiveness and nurture. We see the jacket first protecting a previously hurt Zebie, who then goes on to give the jacket to Iqbal who also needs forgiveness and love. The shot is reversed so we also see Zebie removing the jacket once more, this is ambiguous as we question whether Iqbal will not let Zebie in or if she gives up trying. The rose design on the jacket further highlights the theme of love and hurt.  The rest of the costume design was a full black outfit to show the gravity of the characters feelings for each other.  When Zebie is seen removing her glasses it symbolises her vulnerability and her realisation that things should change.

The setting and props were kept simplistic and minimal to reflect the ‘stripped-down’ nature of the relationship. Our main use of the black curtain as a backdrop shows that there are things that the characters conceal from one another, they are closed off and feel lonely.  When Zebie is in the cylinder/small space, she is trapped and struggling to save herself. This is a reflection of her inner battles as she tries to fix her relationship and also save herself. The shaking light effects in this shot reflect her actual inner conflict; this is portrayed in the contrast between light and dark. The shadow scene shows what the characters idealise- how they want to be spiritually. Yet they cannot physically come together and make the relationship work. Even when they are together, their performances reveal that they do not feel connected, as they want to be but that they are still apart.  The transitional one-take from black curtain to white wall shows the effort Iqbal is also making. He walks away from his safe spot/hiding space to a brighter white area where Zebie embraces him.

In the video we have tried to create a balance of light and dark to reflect that even though there are bad sides to their love, they are still hopeful.  This is even shown in the final shot when Iqbal is standing alone, as although he is dressed in full black he is still surrounded by light, and hope.” – Dila, Zebie, Diana and Iqbal

Our video have some very similar parts to Drake's song such as when Rihanna and Drake are holding each other which could symbolise love or caring for one another. Also their close ups in which we see their emotions.

Ideology analysis

Disney movies promote love as only being heterosexual, rather than showing homosexual love or as feminist would argue that women don't need men in there lives to support them as disney movies tend to express.

Modern family - Doesn't meet the dominate ideology, as they promote family a range of family types. Rather than promoting the nuclear family as the best family type like Blue Bloods does.

Capitalism in video

This video shows capitalism through the words and old footage of capitalists videos. I might use some of the idea from this video to include it in my music video.

This is a documentary on the rise and dangers of capitalism in America

Cultural research

Capitalism is a social system based on the principle of individual rights. Politically, it is the system of laissez-faire (freedom). Legally it is a system of objective laws (rule of law as opposed to rule of man).
This is an extract.
" this article, the authors explore media coverage of a recent acquisition across national borders. Their starting point is that the media represent a key arena of “discursive strategizing” for actors such as corporate managers. They illustrate and specify how global capitalism, as discourse relying on economic and financial rationale and exemplified here by the acquiring firm’s attempts to expand, meets national spirit, exemplified here by the complexity in selling the acquisition target to foreigners. The main contribution of this study lies in identifying how key actors draw on and mobilize rationalistic and nationalistic discourses in public discussion. The analysis illustrates that the same actors can draw on different—even contradictory—discourses at different points in time. Furthermore, different actors—even with opposing objectives—may draw on the same discourse in legitimizing their positions and pursuing specific ends."

Socialism or theory in which the government owns and controls the means of production (as factories) and distribution of goods.

Democracy a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. A perfect example is the U.S., where we elect a president and members of the Congress. We also elect local and state officials.

In politics, hegemony is the geopolitical method of indirect imperial dominance, with which the hegemon (leader state) rules subordinate states, by the threat of intervention, an implied means of power, rather than by direct military force, that is, invasion, occupation, and annexation.
