We chose to do majority in Black & White to convey that its the past, reflection on the relationship. This was mainly due to us starting with the end at the beginning, so to make the story make sense and flow well we changed the filter, so the storyline was more self explanatory.
I felt that this shoot went well, however it needs more planning and time put into detail. This then means for the rest of the scenes we will try and put more time into planing before leaving and taking the shots.
1. What did you achieve last week?
- We took some shots to make some of the scenes of our music video.
2. How will this make your project more successful?
- Due to us staring our music video we have more time to edit each scene and also make sure the story-line is clear and makes sense. 3. Do you think you could have achieved more? why?
- Yes I think that we could have filmed more in the time period we had. Also i feel that we could have retook some scenes. 4. What do you still need to do?
- We need to add the key bathroom scene, the ambiguous text messages. We also we need to convey that the female is the abuser and having scenes of the guy with the girlfriend's best friend.
5. What are your personal responsibilities?
- I need to make time to film the ambiguous text messages.
6. What grade/level do you think your project is currently?
- I think my grade currently is a D, as i feel there is a lot of filming left to do and also lots to work on. 7. How is your group working together? How can it be improved?
- Our group is working well together, we all get on well. However, I think that we all need to make time to get together and film.
For the first shooting, we will start filming out first scene which is also going to be our last scene as we start we have decided to go against Todorov's theory which suggest that a music video should always follow 5 steps. Equilibrium, disruption, recognition, repair disruption, new equilibrium. Our video would start by the kind of disruption which at the end would make more sense as it is like the conclusion of the storyline.
Our first shooting would be the bathroom scene, when our male character falls into the bathroom.
For the props and costume i thought about:
- Candle and rose petals all over the bath
- Knife covered in false blood
- Ring
- The man would be wearing house clothes
Shots we'll be doing:
- Over the shoulder shot
- Medium close up shot to show the expression when the man is being
- Graphic match from the eye to the ring
From the choices we came to a final decision on the font we will be using. We conducted a survey where 13 out of the 20 people we asked chose this design as the felt it was fitting to the theme of the music video and what we wanted to present a title that was worn away to resemble the worn away relationship, that is shown throughout the music video.
Faded.
Faded is our first choice for our band name as our music video is going to be a love story fading away.
In this video, we have asked people what they thought of our name for our brand.
This is me and Leah's weekly evaluation on what we have done last week for the development of our project.
In this audio we have answered to these questions:
- What have we achieved this week?
- How could you make this project more successful?
- Do we think we could have achieved more? Why?
- What do you still need to do?
- What are your personal responsibilities for the next week?
- What grade or level do you think your project is at the moment? Why?
- How is our group working together and how could this improve?
I have been on "DaFont" to look for our brand name and I have screenshot the 7 i have liked the most to be on our cover. To make my mind up I will collect data from people to see which font they like the most and post it on the blog for proof. As a result, I will be able to make my decision.
This is a small video clip made with some of our practise shots. We wanted this mini video to relate to the main video so we used a similar storyline and experimented with the colours as well to see if it help alter the story or emphasis any parts of the video.
I found that black and white made it look like a distant memory of something that had a negative impact on the couple and the brighter ones thoughts of the good time they had together. The use of the speed also added to the storyline. As it showed their relationship as being rushed and not thought out properly.
We need to work on the acting of the characters, the filming itself as we didn't also purposely make the camera blurry. Also when editing we will need to work on the transitions from one location to another. As we used the dolly we need to focus on getting it steady and filming with the dolly to give the best effect.
Due to it being a practice video we didn't think much of the costume and make-up so we didn't produce the best effect or add to the story itself.
Today we took some practise shots, experimenting with the camera and also the comfort of our actors. We chose to use 3 locations as we don't want to use too many locations as to confuse the audience when creating the actual video.
We got to use the 'Dolly', which helped make our recording smooth and also gave a different perspective as well. It gives off a feeling of being watched, this breaks down the 4th wall as it makes the audience feel as if they are the ones observing and prying on the actors life. This is a good technique to involve the audience in the music video.
The genre is pop music, this is due to the song we are using is under the pop category; "Eye Of The Needle" by Sia.
Pop music is the genre of popular music that produces the most hits. A hit is a song that sells many copies, and the latest hits are listed every week on the charts. To get on the charts, a song must be released as a single, although most singles are also released on an album. Songs that become hits almost always share certain features that are sometimes called the pop-music formula. They have a good rhythm, a catchy melody, and are easy to remember and sing along to. They usually have a chorus that's repeated several times and two or more verses. Most pop songs are between two and five minutes long, and the lyrics are usually about the joys and problems of love and relationships.
Due to choosing a pop song, i will be following some of the conventions of a pop song. This will include the music video lasting for 3-5mins and also some repetitive moments in the video itself.
Although the genre of music is pop. The storyline is going to be a tragedy as there is a death in the end. The repetitive theme in the song also makes it easier to show that male domestic violence in repetitive and without bringing awareness it will continue.
I have collected some informations on what different people are thinking about music video and to see if our theme would be something that they would be attracted to listen to.
This is our animated video of our video. I have tried to draw few scenes which are going to be inside our video with the sounds so you could have an idea of what it is going to look like.
Over all from these interviews I have conducted I have found that a music video dealing with a serious issue is something that our target market want and are interested in. This will also help bring awareness as they never really thought about make domestic violence. Not only will it help bring awareness it will also help the song get acknowledgment as they hadn't heard of the song Eye Of The Needle by Sia.
We have chosen to use My nan and granddads house as the main place to film due to the layout of kitchen and where the door is positioned.
This is where the scene of the boy being stabbed will be. We will have roses and candles for decoration.
Here are some of the shots that we want to take...
Pictures of other areas in the house that we may use to film.
We will also be filming along Westfield going in and out of jewellers trying on rings. The only other location will be around hackney, taking shots of the two actors showing the good side of their relationship.
We may also film at Zebie's as her bedroom will be a good place to show her getting ready to go out.
‘Many men who experience domestic abuse from a current or former partner find it difficult to get support; not least because it can be hard for men to acknowledge and discuss their experiences. This can be due to any number of reasons, including love for a partner, embarrassment or shame and concern for any children, or simply not knowing where to go.
Men may attempt different techniques to cope. Coping strategies including adopting an ‘I can handle this' attitude and adapting their behaviour to appease the abuser. Coping strategies like this may make life temporarily safer and easier but they are unlikely to stop the abuse' .
The 2008-09 bulletin states: "More than one in four women (28%) and around one in six men (16%) had experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16. These figures are equivalent to an estimated 4.5 million female victims of domestic abuse and 2.6 million male victims."
Today in lesson sir wanted to see our imaginative skills. So that when it comes to generating our ideas for our music videos we are thinking on the correct path. To help with this we took part in two activities: The first activity was to continue a story. We had yo begin by writing a true fact about something that happened to us individually in primary school. Then we had to fold it over and put it into the middle so that know one would see. Then we all took a random one, sir then told us to make up a story for the individual. Each time we switched the pieces of paper, so no one knew who's story we were writing or adding too. At the end we all received our stories, when reading them we got a creative storyline as everyone wrote something different making our fictional lives more interesting.
In the second activity sir asked us to pick 4 different numbers. Each number had a different person, place, object or genre. This was so when creating a story we had restraints. We then had to create a story with a climax introducing these 4 things. This helped us write with borders/limits. Thus constraining our creative flow.
We created a small music video based off Rockstar, mimicking the original format of the music video. This was difficult as you had to take people out of their comfort zones to preform, which without rehearsal can turn out really bad.
When it came to editing it was difficult as some of the participants were not very good at lip syncing so the music was not in sync cause the quality of the video to be poor.
Sir only gave us 2hours to complete this task and we had to do it without planing and also at times when getting participants was difficult.
From this task I have learnt the importance of lip syncing for my music video and how bad lip syncing can alter/ruin the whole video. Moving forward finding camera confident people and also taking more than one shot would help improve the quality to the video.

From this I have learnt how long it take just to create 50 seconds of a music video. So i now know how much time i will have to put into planing and filming.
Mise en Scene also needs a lot of thought and time. To make it work well, rather than just chucking things together because it looks good.
How i will use what i have learnt:
I will make sure i dedicate time to planing thoroughly
Whilst filming for our music video as one of our tasks we had many challenges and obstacles we had come across whether it being the way in which we place the camera or the timing of when each character should come up. Nonetheless, we did have a couple of strengths, for example: our attires were colour coordinated along with our props which were the balloons.
Location: school corridors; each floor had their own colour, e.g: red, blue and yellow which we matched our outfits to Props used: balloons, a fan Outfits: black jeans/trousers, black shoes and a bright coloured top (whichever floor each character was designated to)
Camera: Canon EOS 600D
The first scene introduced had one or two implications as we had difficulties with our timings with the song and when the character had jumped up. Thus, it resulted to us cropping the song clip as the intro of it was too long. So, once this was done the beat of the music started when the character first came onto the scene and went very well together.
Second clip was sped up to match when the music had started. The character is wearing a bright yellow jumper which contrasts to the orange background behind her. However, there were a couple of balloons thrown at the character but it was not captured on camera due to timing, this is one implication we had whilst filming.
How we manipulated mise-en-scene: 1. Balloons: we decided to use balloons are our main prop as we felt as though it gave a very positive and uplifting mood which fits the songs criteria as the song itself gave out a very contended sense 2. Costumes: when it came to our attires we came up with the idea of matching it with the colour of each school corridor that we was designated to. This manipulated mise-en-scene as in a few scenes one of us were wearing a yellow jumper, but our background was yellow which contrast one another. 3. Settings: we chose to film in the corridors because of the colour each floor has and decided that the coloured wall will make a huge difference to our video itself since it brightened our shots and made us stand out too. This manipulated mise-en-scene as popular music videos in the industry focus heavily on the settings and how it could present the characters personality.
EBI:
If we were given the chance to do this again we would improve on what resources we plan to use. For example, after editing the music video we came up with the idea of using a scrabble board game at the beginning and write out the name of the song. This could signify unity as it is a family/friends game and as it is a fun game (to some) it precisely represents what our music video is about.
We would improve on what kind of shots we would use. For example, in this music video we only used 2 different type of shots which was close ups and medium shots. In future tasks we will use a vast majority of camera shots to explore mise-en-scene in a number of ways.
When it came to the lighting it was a barrier for us due to it being minimal as we could only use the lights that were switched on in the corridors. But, next time we will plan what lighting we could use for example, use the light of a lamp or flashlights from our phone etc.
Ariana Grande - The Way is similar to our music video as she used balloons. However they made the music video look even better by adding holograms over the top and by having loads of balloons rather than just a few. Creating more of an atmosphere.
“In our video we have tried to recreate a disrupted and
broken relationship to create a melancholy atmosphere. We have done this by
adapting the mise-en-scene and ensuring some subtle costume changes – such as
Zebie’s jacket – to signify small differences in the two characters, showing
little shifts in the relationship, which would cause disturbances. However, the
jacket in this instance was also used as a symbol of forgiveness and nurture.
We see the jacket first protecting a previously hurt Zebie, who then goes on to
give the jacket to Iqbal who also needs forgiveness and love. The shot is
reversed so we also see Zebie removing the jacket once more, this is ambiguous as
we question whether Iqbal will not let Zebie in or if she gives up trying. The
rose design on the jacket further highlights the theme of love and hurt. The rest of the costume design was a full
black outfit to show the gravity of the characters feelings for each
other. When Zebie is seen removing her
glasses it symbolises her vulnerability and her realisation that things should
change.
The setting and props were kept simplistic and minimal to
reflect the ‘stripped-down’ nature of the relationship. Our main use of the
black curtain as a backdrop shows that there are things that the characters
conceal from one another, they are closed off and feel lonely. When Zebie is in the cylinder/small space,
she is trapped and struggling to save herself. This is a reflection of her
inner battles as she tries to fix her relationship and also save herself. The
shaking light effects in this shot reflect her actual inner conflict; this is
portrayed in the contrast between light and dark. The shadow scene shows what
the characters idealise- how they want to be spiritually. Yet they cannot
physically come together and make the relationship work. Even when they are
together, their performances reveal that they do not feel connected, as they
want to be but that they are still apart. The transitional one-take from black curtain to white wall shows the
effort Iqbal is also making. He walks away from his safe spot/hiding space to a
brighter white area where Zebie embraces him.
In the video we have tried to create a balance of light and
dark to reflect that even though there are bad sides to their love, they are
still hopeful. This is even shown in the
final shot when Iqbal is standing alone, as although he is dressed in full
black he is still surrounded by light, and hope.” – Dila, Zebie, Diana and
Iqbal
Our video have some very similar parts to Drake's song such as when Rihanna and Drake are holding each other which could symbolise love or caring for one another. Also their close ups in which we see their emotions.
Disney movies promote love as only being heterosexual, rather than showing homosexual love or as feminist would argue that women don't need men in there lives to support them as disney movies tend to express.
Modern family - Doesn't meet the dominate ideology, as they promote family a range of family types. Rather than promoting the nuclear family as the best family type like Blue Bloods does.
This video shows capitalism through the words and old footage of capitalists videos. I might use some of the idea from this video to include it in my music video.
This is a documentary on the rise and dangers of capitalism in America
Capitalism is a social system based on the principle of individual rights. Politically, it is the system of laissez-faire (freedom). Legally it is a system of objective laws (rule of law as opposed to rule of man). This is an extract. " this article, the authors explore media coverage of a recent acquisition across national borders. Their starting point is that the media represent a key arena of “discursive strategizing” for actors such as corporate managers. They illustrate and specify how global capitalism, as discourse relying on economic and financial rationale and exemplified here by the acquiring firm’s attempts to expand, meets national spirit, exemplified here by the complexity in selling the acquisition target to foreigners. The main contribution of this study lies in identifying how key actors draw on and mobilize rationalistic and nationalistic discourses in public discussion. The analysis illustrates that the same actors can draw on different—even contradictory—discourses at different points in time. Furthermore, different actors—even with opposing objectives—may draw on the same discourse in legitimizing their positions and pursuing specific ends."
Socialism or theory in which the government owns and controls the means of production (as factories) and distribution of goods.
Democracy a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. A perfect example is the U.S., where we elect a president and members of the Congress. We also elect local and state officials.
In politics, hegemony is the geopolitical method of indirect imperial dominance, with which the hegemon (leader state) rules subordinate states, by the threat of intervention, an implied means of power, rather than by direct military force, that is, invasion, occupation, and annexation.
